There are many types of insurance plans, from catastrophic (only covers emergencies) to full coverage and
everything in between. The first thing you need to know is:
What type of plan do you have?
Is it an HMO type plan?
If it is an HMO type plan:
- It dictates that you pick a “Primary Care Provider” or PCP.
- Your PCP must then coordinate referrals for all other types of providers and services.
Is it a PPO type plan?
If it is an PPO type plan:
- It allows you to see whomever you want within the company’s provider network with no referrals needed.
Your insurance card should show which type of plan you have. Explore your company’s web site and the
insurance booklet they send you yearly to learn about your plan.
